How to Handle Some Common Issues with Your Braces

Posted .

For the most part, wearing braces is problem free and simply a matter of straightening your pearly whites. On occasion though, an issue can crop up that might need attention. Should an issue arise, do you know what to do? Today we are going to take a look at just few issues that may pop up while you are straightening your smile.

Naturally, we recommend giving our team a call if something out of the ordinary occurs. We can determine if you need to be seen sooner than your next scheduled visit, and sometimes it can wait until your next appointment.

While you are waiting however, there are things you can do to be comfortable until you can be seen:

-An archwire comes out of a bracket

Should an archwire accidentally come out of a bracket, you can try inserting the wire back into the tube using tweezers. You can also place wax on the wire to reduce contact with oral tissue.

-A bracket comes loose

Should a bracket come loose, you can place wax over the bracket. However, if the bracket actually falls off, please put it in a safe place and bring it in at your next scheduled appointment.

-A wire pops out and is poking your cheeks

Should a wire pop out and you can feel it poking the soft tissues in the mouth, you can flatten the wire against the tooth. Pencil erasers or Q-tips can be used to do the trick. You can also press orthodontic wax over the wire so that it doesn’t rub or irritate your soft tissues.

-A coil spring comes off

Should a coil spring come off, you will want to hang onto the coil and call our office. We will determine if you need to come in before your next appointment, otherwise, the coil may be put back on during your next scheduled visit.
