What Are the Necessary Steps When I’ve Broken My Braces Away From Home?

Posted .

Orthodontic emergencies happen, even when you’re on vacation, and it’s best to treat the issue and improve the situation as soon as possible. Doing so can help you have a more convenient and relaxing trip. To help you take care of the problem, our orthodontist, Dr. Jae Park, instructs you to take certain steps.

The first step is to adjust the braces. All you need to do is slide the bracket back over the necessary tooth (if you have a broken bracket) or push the wire back into place (if you have a broken wire). You can do these things with your fingers, tweezers, or a pencil eraser. Pushing the wire back is easiest with the pencil eraser.

The second step is to grab your orthodontic wax. When the bracket and wire are in the proper positions, cover them with orthodontic wax. This will help them stay in place. It will also keep them from irritating and even cutting your oral tissues.

The third step is to schedule an appointment. All you need to do is call our office, explain the situation, and schedule an appointment for a time when you’re back in town. If you have an upcoming appointment soon, we might just have you wait until that time for treatment.
